Typically a floor plan design includes the location of walls, windows, doors, and stairs, as well as fixed installations. 11 Minimalist Bathroom Ideas

wet room bathroom design

A good idea is to choose a floor tile covering that has a gentle texture, giving some grip under foot. In building terms, the absolute fundamental issues when planning bathroom remodel ideas like wet rooms revolve around floor construction, floor and ceiling heights and falls – the slopes needed to drain water away. Since a wet room needs to have drainage to the floor, keeping a streamlined look, you must be able to include a slope to a plug hole, trap and drain below the lowest point in the space. Using matching tiles or composite panels on both floors and walls is a good idea for wet rooms and small bathrooms as it will accentuate the sense of space. Be sure to run any vent fans for a minimum of 20 minutes after showering.

Luxury handshowers create a spa-like environment for the ultimate showering experience. Take advantage of the latest in state-of-the-art showering luxury and turn your bathroom into a personal spa. A wet room or walk-in shower will add a truly luxurious-up, spa-like showering experience to your wet room ideas.

A wet room can be a real luxury at home, even when the space you have to work with is limited. Try thinking along the lines of colorful floor-to-ceiling tiles, built-in seating and sleek, concealed pipework. Planner 5D stands out as a solid choice for both DIY home remodelers and professionals who value simplicity. Its user-friendly interface makes it accessible for newcomers, while its comprehensive feature set satisfies the basic requirements of more experienced designers. However, for those seeking in-depth customization and advanced architectural features, Planner 5D might fall short.

Choose the right size sanitaryware to enhance the sense of space

'A screen will help contain major puddles, but underfloor heating and heated towel rails will also speed up the drying process and help prevent slip hazards. 'It’s important to take extra steps with regards to heat, ventilation and drying than you would in a regular bathroom,' continues Nicholas Cunild. 'You may be lucky enough to live in a hot climate which naturally gives a warmer bathroom. But if you live in a colder climate and you exit a wet room onto carpeted rooms – add kids, dogs and all the rest –  it is a recipe for waterlogged, messy floors everywhere. A wet room can provide a spacious showering area and the high-end look of a luxurious spa hotel because the look tends to be very streamlined. Wet rooms  are also level entry, so easily accessible to all, not to mention hygienic and easy to clean.

Also, wet rooms can be easier to clean, because you can use the same types of cleaners on all of the surfaces. When deciding which wet room system to go for, think about what your sub-floor is made of. If you have a concrete floor, it can be quite invasive to channel in a waste and create the gradient fall required for drainage. To create a wet room, you'll need to create a watertight environment, for example by tanking both the floor and walls of the room to protect it from any leaks. Wet rooms are well-loved for their walk-in shower designs, but how about a walk-through shower? For the floor of a wet room, you should only consider porcelain tiles that have a PEI rating of three or higher.

Create Your Own Oasis

Use Cedreo’s continuous drawing mode to create floor plans from scratch. It’s so easy to use, you can draw most bathroom layouts in 5 minutes or less. But don’t let its simplicity fool you — this bathroom design tool creates stunning designs suitable for professional presentations and marketing materials.

A good fan needs to be wired into the room (still coming on with the light switch) but with a separate cut-off switch, which is outside the room. Humidity-tracking extractor fans are best for wet rooms as they work continuously and incrementally with automatic extraction for however much steam is in the room. Maintain a seamless look by incorporating a recessed shelf within the shower – a great shower storage idea to keep essential bottles without encroaching on the rest of the space. If you are not able to create a true wet room, the latest ultra-low profile shower trays are a clever alternative. While it’s easiest to install a small wet room in a new-build or extension, any bathroom, upstairs or down, can be fully tanked for wet room use. While Coohom offers a nice variety of user-friendly tools, don’t forget to read the fine print.

When properly installed and functioning perfectly, waterproof panels will contain moisture in the bathroom. The purpose of a shower tray is to capture and drain water that falls from the showerhead, preventing it from spreading to other areas of the room. However, if you only have one bathroom in the house, and it has a bathtub, turning it into a wet room could hurt your sales prospects, as buyers prefer a room with at least one tub.

For many years, wet room ideas were a divisive choice for a bathroom renovation. While they were favored for the idea that they could make your space look bigger, and that they work well for small spaces, the major drawback was the idea that when you shower, the whole bathroom gets wet. When it comes to the best flooring for a wet room bathroom a small porcelain tile layout generally works well.

Architectural Sketches

After you’ve completed the basic outlines of your house plan drawing, you can add shading and shadows to give your drawings more depth and dimension. This will make your drawings look more realistic and visually appealing. Once you’ve created the basic outline of your house, you can add architectural elements like windows, doors, rooflines, and balconies. To start your drawing, it's best to sketch out a rough outline of the house. This rough sketch can be used as a reference point for making changes and additions as needed.

Modern 3D House Drawing

The gingerbread house drawing is a cheerful project, filled with sweetness and joy. Sketch a simple house shape, then adorn it with candy decorations, icing, and a welcoming door. This cartoon-style drawing is perfect for kids and those young at heart, celebrating the festive spirit of creativity. Dreaming of a modern house and bringing it to life on paper is an exciting endeavor.

You will see the rectangle pattern of bricks on the chimney and “U” shaped shingles on the roof. Before you design a whole building, you can start with one room. You can sketch this bedroom with a window, bed, bookshelf, dresser, rug, and light fixtures. It’s made up of rectangles with circles on top of the bedposts. Below, you can put your skills to work as you draw an entire bedroom.

Start by sketching a basic rectangle, followed by a triangular roof. Add in personalized touches like a pathway or landscaping to give your drawing character. This project is a fantastic way to express creativity and bring your dream house to life, even if it’s just on paper.

Start with a square or rectangle as the base of your home. To add details, draw two triangular roofs and several small rectangles for windows. You can also draw a door at the bottom of the house and finish off with a small chimney. Enchanting and whimsical, a fairy house drawing invites you into a world of magic. Start with organic shapes and natural elements like leaves and flowers for the structure. The playful aspect of designing a fairy house encourages you to think outside the box and infuse your artwork with fantasy.

You should be able to produce a high-quality 2D Floor Plan complete with wall measurements and dimensions so it’s easy to translate your house plan into a house blueprint. These architecture drawings show detailed views of the finishes. With them, architects can communicate detailed information regarding the type of floor coverings, moldings, textures, and colors. House sketches are an excellent way to visualize the layout, design, and features of a home.

If you want to import an existing floor plan, simply import the floorplan, set the scale, and then trace over it. As you work you’ll see updated measurements to ensure accuracy. These cottage-style drawings are so cute and creative. Each building has its own unique look and beautiful floral design to accompany it. If you want to draw a realistic house, this is a great choice.

The house is an early example of the International Style in the United States that evokes principles that were developed by Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. For multi-level homes, just create an opening and then drag and drop the desired type of stairs from the furnishings tab. Sketch a super beautiful and fairy tale-style house on a hill with a cloud above it.

This will help you ensure that all of your measurements are accurate and will make your house plans drawings look more professional. You can save a lot of time and money if you design a house plan yourself. Many local authorities require a house blueprint together with the permit application. If you have already designed the house layout, it is relatively quick for an architect to finalize the home plan and convert it into a house blueprint.

12 small closet ideas that'll help you finally organize your wardrobe

simple closet design

The extra lighting means you'll actually see everything you have—and you won't lose items to dark corners. "These boxes keep small bags in sight and safe from dust while giving you an additional surface above for folded clothing or jewelry display," Cattano says. Clutter is the antithesis of home design, so well-organized closets are key to a happy, beautiful home. If you still find that your closet's not quite big enough to store everything you need, look around your home and get creative. For example, this Collected Interiors design project repurposed vertical space next to the bed as a secondary closet.

DIY Closet Organizer

If you have a single free wall in your bedroom, you have enough space for a walk-in closet. Single-wall walk-in closets are a great small bedroom idea. If you are clever with the design, you can easily fit all of your clothes and shoes on the same wall. The easiest way to do this is by positioning shoe storage and any additional shelves or cupboards along the perimeter of the wall, with the main clothing storage area in the center. Closet TowersCloset towers are a component of wood closet systems, offering additional shelf storage.

Use a Mix of Storage

They're a great place to store clothes, shoes and accessories, but also to showcase your personality and experiment with design. Think beautiful built-ins, trendy paint colors, statement lighting — plus walls of high heels, designer bags and color-coordinated clothing. Whether you're hunting for design inspiration or organizing hacks, we've rounded up walk-in closet ideas that prioritize style and function. From storage solutions for small closets to layout and design for the walk-in closet of your dreams, there are clever closet ideas to suit any size or style space. Designing a closet to be both stylish and functional takes some planning.

Put your wardrobe on display for easy access

Few things in this world are as satisfying as designing a closet so it's organized. Not only does it make finding an outfit a breeze, but seeing stacks of perfectly folded sweaters and craft bins of neatly stacked stationery just brings out the Marie Kondo in all of us. But getting the motivation for designing a closet for organization can be the hardest part of the whole process. If you're currently lacking that inspiration, taking a glance at a few professionally-organized closet systems can provide just the jumpstart you need.

Walk-In vs. Reach-In

simple closet design

If you intend to try on clothes in your closet, a full-length mirror is a must. To contrast the off-white walls and wardrobe in this cozy closet, Becca Galbraith of Becca Interiors brings in a patterned ottoman and positions it near the mirror. Warm, elegant neutrals are a favorite at the moment, and when paired with antiqued brass hardware they exude a sense of calm and restfulness. Mixing these with timbers, hessians and natural fabrics around the space brings a feeling airy opulence. For those vintage pieces that are too delicate to wear or any old clothing with special meaning, floating mount framing will help preserve them and keep them from sitting unloved in a drawer. Despite how a space is listed, you might be surprised to find what you end up with.

If you don’t want your shoes to show, then put them in a cabinet. It appears to be a piece of furniture but opens to hold up to 10 pairs of shoes. If you need additional shoe storage in areas other than a closet, shoe storage cabinets are great for mudrooms, garages, entryways and more. For wire shelving, consider using a corner piece with a continuous hanger rod for easy sliding.

Use Clear Cabinets

Tiny closets are common, especially in city apartments, historic homes, and otherwise petite floor plans. After you’ve selected the closet basics, there are plenty of accessories that can add functionality and convenience. You ask your colleagues to ignore the mess, you’ve been meaning to invest in a filing cabinet, and maybe even some custom office cabinets, since 2020.

Create closet storage zones with stackable bins

Towers are great for storing folded garments like sweaters and jeans. You can also use the shelves to stash hats, bags and shoes. Some are compatible with drawer units, allowing you to create concealed storage.

Store boxes and bins on higher shelves, while keeping everyday items at eye level. Sophie has been an interior stylist and journalist for over 20 years and has worked for many of the main interior magazines during that time, both in-house and as a freelancer. For H&G, she writes features about interior design – and is known for having an eye for a beautiful room. Futuristic vertical lights are a quick way to make your closet feel as if it could be part of a spy's tech room. Spreading light throughout different points make a space feel less cramped, too. Walk-in closets were once just the stuff of big city movies and Park Avenue fantasies, but shiplap cabinetry perfectly translates the space for a more charming farmhouse look.

The idea of a clutter-free closet might seem impossible, but these closet organization ideas prove otherwise. No matter the size of your closet—sure, we know a sprawling celeb-style wardrobe area isn’t realistic for most of us—you’ll find closet storage solutions to make the most of what you do have. You’d be surprised how this one nook can lead to overall home organization. If you're thinking of small walk-in closet ideas, closet systems can be configured to fit spaces of all sizes. No matter how small, walk-in closets are the epitome of luxury.

Creating a practical and stylish walk-in closet is about being space-savvy and incorporating key organizational systems. It might also require some bedroom decluttering before you get started... Sometimes we get into the habit of thinking everything in our closets must be hung. Instead, consider your needs and whether bins or drawers can go further for you. "In closets tight on space where you have stacks of denim or sweaters, shelf dividers will provide the structure and division your clothes need to stay looking tidy."

A simple way to elevate the mood in your small closet is to spruce up the lighting situation. "A stylish yet subtle flush mount light with a soft white bulb works great," Kimami says. In this design, created by Emily June Designs, a bold light fixture lends an earthy and luxurious feel.

To own a home at all, especially one with a three-story slide, can feel unattainable for most. From July 2021 to June 2022, home buyers were richer, whiter and older than they had been in decades. The share that were first-time homeowners was the lowest it’s been since at least 1981.

With an array of career ambitions (and cute outfits to match!), the beach blonde has managed to remain an arbiter of taste since her birth in 1959. Then, in 1962, Mattel released the very first Barbie Dreamhouse, giving the doll a special place to call home. Several decades and many iterations later, Barbie's dreamhouse remains one of the most famous landmarks in fictional architecture—and continues to serve as inspiration for interior designers. As the world waits with bated breath for the premiere of Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, the design community has thrusted the spotlight on the dreamhouse. But unlike Barbie's original Dreamhouse—which is essentially one big room—this version offers guidance how to make the most of limited square feet. Sections for dining, living, and sleeping give Barbie a full-functioning home, while small touches like a Murphy bed and swivel provides plenty of small space savviness.

In 1982, the Equal Rights Amendment, which stated that rights “shall not be denied or abridged” on the basis of sex, fell three states short of being added to the Constitution. “If you are to be a glamorous, sophisticated woman that exciting things happen to, you need an apartment and you need to live in it alone! The single bed and a framed photo of Ken further asserted that this was Barbie’s own, unshared domestic space. This practice, known as credit discrimination, wasn’t banned until 1974, when the Equal Credit Opportunity Act was passed. Many employers weren’t legally required to pay women equal salaries as men for the same work either, before the passage of the Equal Pay Act in 1963.

More than 60 years of Barbie’s Dreamhouses have further instilled that in us from a young age. In an interview, Kim Culmone, Mattel’s head of design for Barbie, said that apart from wheelchair accessibility, the Dreamhouse doesn’t reflect those identities.

With 75+ accessories and customizable spaces that double the fun, it makes an exceptional gift for kids ages 3 years old and up.

To bring the doll’s world to cinematic life for the buzzy Hollywood movie “Barbie,” four life-size Dreamhouses were erected at studios in Britain, leading to a shortage in a supply of pink paint. After beginning modestly in cardboard, the Dreamhouses became plastic, pastel, palatial and electrified, often all at once. They acquired elevators, sun decks, modern European furniture, recycling bins and multiple bedrooms — though Barbie remained perennially single and holding the lease (or mortgage). Since square footage is at a premium, the Motorhouse isn't as dreamy as some of its predecessors—but might we argue it offers something better? From a practical footprint to a breakfast nook that transforms into a bed, this version proves that home can be anywhere—regardless of its size or location. While the 1979 iteration may not have all the bells and whistles of the more recent models—and, of course, that primarily pink palette—designer Candace Shure admits it's her personal dream house.

Hélène Pinaud and Julien Schwartzmann meet at the National School of Architecture in Strasbourg, founding the Heju studio in 2015. 'We work around straight lines and minimalist volumes to create timeless spaces. Our sensitive and spontaneous approach allows us to optimize spaces as well as possible, to challenge codes and customs and to advocate a return to emotion.

Curvy woven lounge chairs and a black and white rug with a simple geometric pattern were placed in the spacious living room that overlooks the lush grounds. "For our inspiration, we looked towards many of the early modernist Japanese architects, who were dealing with similar issues of identity when European modernism was entering Japan at rapid speed," explained the architecture practice. London office Takero Shimazaki Architects renovated this apartment within the Barbican Estate, which is known for its brutalist architecture – a style that emerged in the UK in the 1950s. Modernism emerged as an architectural movement in the 1930s and has influenced the pared-back appearance of many interior design projects ever since.

There are no hard and fast rules for minimalist interior design, but there are some themes that most people use. As mentioned, minimalist spaces favor a more restrained and focused approach to color, often incorporating a monochromatic color palette. Minimalist design is about creating a serene environment with just the right minimalist pieces. There are many benefits to minimalist living, including mental clarity and freedom from physical clutter which can lead to higher productivity levels. A minimalistic home also has increased resale value because it’s easier for buyers to imagine themselves in that space than one filled with bumping bookcases or antique furniture. It is important, however, to make sure there are no obstructions such as furniture or heavy curtains blocking out any natural light sources.

What Makes This Style So Popular and Relevant Even Today?

Eight pared-back kitchens with minimalist storage solutions

Natural light reflects and refracts in surprising ways against the unusual angles of the walls. The lower level is reached by a set of distinctive hyper-minimal stairs whose black treads seem to float on their own. A lighthearted detail not to be missed is the friendly face (most likely unintentional) formed by the two lights and vent over the kitchen area.

The house's geometric shapes are also echoed in its interiors, which include a large, open-plan living room with soft colours and earthy finishes that overlooks a meadow where cattle graze. This will allow you the freedom to experiment without taking much risk as you can easily play with and switch out smaller items from time to time for a quick room refresh. To embrace minimalist design, avoid the challenges of having so little to work with by buying quality over quantity and invest in classics that are both eye-catching and certain to keep their appeal for the long haul. The rule being that if an item doesn’t have a dedicated space for it then it must be deemed unnecessary.

What should be in a minimalist living room?

In this article, we’ll delve into the enchantment of minimalist interior design, providing practical tips and creative ideas to help you transform your living space into a haven of serenity and style. So join me on a journey to discover how “less is more” can lead to a home that is both beautiful and long-lasting. Clean lines, reductive, uncluttered, monochromatic, simplicity, "less is more"—these are some of the terms and concepts that immediately come to mind when thinking about minimalism. Minimalist living rooms take a pared-back approach to furniture, color palettes, and decor, an approach that can be used to create a streamlined feel in any style of interior. Contrary to what many people believe, the modern minimalist design isn’t devoid of character. While the fundamental idea revolves around open spaces, clean lines, and no clutter, it also incorporates texture and quality materials to add depth and interest.

Japanese Minimalism – A Timeless Style for Home and Life

The minimal decoration inside causes details such as the rich wood grain and the warm color of the walls to pop. Though still a conceptual project, Penda’s Hong Kong Art Storage is a unique and simple space whose interest lies in its flexibility and use of interesting materials. At its heart is a suitcase-like copper art storage box whose red tone is activated by the surrounding natural light, and warms the untouched rough concrete surroundings. Designed as a gallery-like space to display the residents’ furniture collection, this sculptural interior features continuous slanted concrete surfaces.

A minimalist interior design aesthetic is intended to create a calming, harmonious space that speaks volumes through understated elegance. The usual perception of minimalist interior design involves stripping down a room to its bare form and aesthetics—open floor plans, clutter-free spaces, white walls, purposeful furniture, and minimum decor. Generally when discussing minimalist homes, people imagine clutter-free rooms with white walls and a lack of any unnecessary furnishing or decor. The look is often seen as a close cousin to Scandinavian or Japanese interiors, where both cultures have long embraced a less-is-more ideology. Spaces that fall within a minimalist design aesthetic are typically defined by clean lines, limited ornamentation, a neutral color scheme, and natural materials.

Neutral color palettes are a hallmark of minimalist design, with whites, grays, and earth tones dominating. Natural materials like wood, stone, and metal add warmth and texture to the environment. These materials enhance the visual appeal and evoke a connection with the natural world. Tulley also prioritized storage for a quiet and calm San Francisco kitchen, a key tool for maintaining a minimalist living space while meeting realistic functionality concerns for the typical homeowner or family. Tulley added an open box shelf to visually unite the column and wall and provide storage for her clients. "We were careful to align all of the openings, the glass to ledge, and edge of cabinets to calls," she says.

Main living spaces are accessed by a set of wide outside steps at Smith Residence, a cluster of gabled Corten steel structures by Canadian studio MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple that were designed to resemble traditional fishing huts. A distinctive Pierre Jeanneret Chandigarh Easy Chair is among the modernist design elements added to Biscuit Loft, an apartment in Downtown Los Angeles that is housed in a converted factory. This is the latest roundup in our Dezeen Lookbooks series providing visual inspiration for the home. Previous lookbooks feature kitchen extensions, homes with indoor trees and purple interiors informed by Pantone's 2022 colour of the year. Among the renowned designers and architects who pioneered the style are Charles and Ray Eames, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, all of whom created designs and buildings that have become hallmarks of the trend. "Just like artists must stop at some point and not add colors or brush strokes, a designer too must know when to stop," says Frommer.

With our busy schedules, this easy upkeep allows us more time to enjoy our space rather than constantly tending to it. For those seeking a blend of aesthetics, durability, and ease of maintenance, Luxury Vinyl Tile emerges as a top choice in the world of innovative flooring solutions. Engineered wood is constructed with a top layer of real wood veneer over plywood, enhancing its stability in humid environments compared to solid hardwood. While engineered wood can be sanded and refinished to a certain extent, it falls short of the refinishing capabilities of solid hardwood.

'For me, an minimalistic interior gives a sense of peace and harmony,' says Pella. If you’re worried about not having enough variety in your home, you can consider adding different focal points through the introduction of different textures. Minimalism is all about careful consideration of what you allow into your home.

Similar to Rath’s take on working with a client’s favorite color, Erin Byrnes of Byrnes Interiors starts with a color the client loves but then takes it up a notch. If they love blue, she’ll hone in on that and pick complementary elements that are sure to speak their language. To reach – and connect with – their audience, brands need to invest in the creative process, trust an agency partner, push boundaries and be consistent. Apart from the on-brand purple background, what did it have to do with chocolate? But the design completely nailed the brief of making you feel good and embodied the “A glass and a half full of joy” sign-off.

Schaefer's Canal House Is A Restaurant With A Great View In Maryland

schaefer's canal house

Lively and fun but also quiet and calm at night. Good food & drink, with easy access. We docked right along-side parallel to the canal.

This Maryland Restaurant Right On The Canal Is The Definition Of Dinner With A View

Dock guy, Steve, carefully made sure we were tied with long spring lines to handle the tide. By the 1950s, Venice had become known as the "slum by the sea." The canals were in a state of disrepair, and the area was considered undesirable. It wasn't until the 1990s that the city funded a restoration project.

Popular with Tourists,

Enjoyed the bike trail and restaurant accommodations. Dock crew were very accommodating. The docks and power were very new and more than adequate.

LGBTQ+ friendly,

We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you.

Plan Your Trip

We really enjoyed the bar and restaurant. I would definitely stay there again. Be aware there are no showers or local stores.

Awesome! Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter.

Those would be welcome additions that could lead to longer stays. Dealing with the currents in the canal and the huge concrete Chesapeake City Bridge support in the middle of the dock can be quite a challenge. And many a loud speed boat takes advantage of the good fuel prices here. But the people are friendly and the area peaceful, with the restaurant offering decent food and beverage options.

Become an Atlas Obscura member and experience far fewer ads and no pop-ups.

Although we were tied on the river face dock we had no wake issues all night. Very helpful & professional, well versed in the challenges of their current. Excellent hours for transients if trying to stretch your day. Nice casual restaurant on site. Staff was great - and knowledgeable of local conditions and setting lines for the 3+ foot tide swings.

California, Through Your Eyes

The development opened to much fanfare on July 4, 1905. Red Cars (trolleys) transported people from downtown to the beach. Current and pilings made for a rough night. The restaurant was lively and the food was good. As to the accommodations there is a substantial amount of current through the marina and the tidal change is roughly 3’. With the marina only offering pilings that makes it tough to position bumpers for cushioning as the shifting current bounces the boat around.

Enjoyed our dinner so much we decided to go back for Sunday brunch. Free docks on opposite shore were silted in. One is exposed to canal but very little canal traffic. Tied-up just east of bridge but never noticed bridge noise above our heater-fans noise.

I recommend using this marina when passing thru the C & D Canal. The marina staff were excellent in all phases, approach and tie up was easy, and everyone respected the no wake zone so there was minimal rocking. The Venice Canals were built in 1905 by Abbot Kinney, a developer who wanted to create a replica of Venice, Italy, in California. Kinney's vision was to create a network of canals, complete with gondolas, bridges, and beautiful houses. They were designed to drain the marshes and wetlands that existed in the area. After traveling from the East Coast to San Francisco, Kinney found his way to what is now known as Venice Beach, California.

Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.

It’s the definition of dinner with a view. Because of the popularity of the Venice Beach canals, copycats soon sprang up south of Kinney’s development. From the Venice Fishing Pier, walk north on Speedway Street and turn right on 27th Avenue.

We never encountered such a helpful friendly and funny dockside assistance Restaurant was very good along with the staff. And fun watching all the canal traffic. While Schaefer's Canal House is an awesome marina, they also have an amazing bar and restaurant attached to it that second to none.

A good starting point is at the corner of Washington and Strongs Drive, where a sign marks the enclave’s entrance. There are no official boat rentals, but there is a public boat launch open from 9 am to 6 pm for non-motorized watercraft. Steve and his team provide an excellent experience. The location is great and we got to see the swapping of pilots on a vehicle carrier ship right from our boat. Good spot for waiting on the current and getting a great meal at the restaurant.

Our vessel is definately in good hands with Dockmaster Tom & Manager Steven Connell. They are able to run this top notch facility because of the knowledgable & friendly deckhands. (Olivia Marro, Leah Stubbs, Scott Seisler) Schaefer's is without question your #1 way point when transiting the C&D Canal. Nice people and the dock hands do a great job.

The water quality is now maintained through twice-weekly natural tidal flushing cycles. Occasionally, seals and leopard sharks venture in through open tidal gates. By 1920, more visitors were arriving by car, parking was scarce, and the area had been constructed for walkers not wheels. Homeowners fought back and litigation lasted for four years. In the end, the California Supreme Court sided with Venice, which had by then consolidated with the city of LA. LA went ahead with the plan and the canals became paved roads (now known as Market, Main, San Juan, Grand and Windward) and the lagoon became a traffic circle by the end of 1929.

Schaefer's Canal House Chesapeake City, Maryland Chesapeake Bay Marina

schaefer's canal house

Restaurant next to dock was excellent. Not sure if there was a 'go fast' boat convention in town, but the exhaust noise from noon 'til dark was really ridiculous. Lively place with live music over the weekend.

This Tiny Restaurant Helps Keep Kashmiri Cuisine Alive in Pakistan

The staff was incredibly helpful when docking and getting advice on transiting the canal and out the the Delaware Bay. The restaurant is very good and the area is clean and well maintained. The current can be strong going into the fuel dock, so make sure when docking you approach against the current and have staff help grab your lines. Dockmaster was very helpful in getting us set-up at the dock and providing information on currents and departure times for the rest of the journey back through the Chesapeake Bay. Nice location with the restaurant and the dockmaster hours were very convenient for our 5p arrival. Only suggestion is to add showers to the facility.

For Boaters

Steve, the Dockmaster, went out of his way to make sure we had a great stay. We will definitely stop here again. Nice for a quick stop especially with the shoaling at the entrance to the Anchorage across the canal.

Where to Stay Nearby

The high outside dock in front of the restaurant prohibited us from getting on and off of the boat at low tide. The boat traffic both large and small, rocked us all night long. There is no bath house, so that is certainly a “con”. The restaurant was the only real bright spot for this location. This is a great place to stay. Tom, Steve, Olivia and staff were great- friendly and professional and the restaurant is also great, it’s on the bike path and water taxi is available to cross over to town.

Fast service,

Good dinner at the restaurant. Restaurant is good and convenient. Currents not a significant issue when taken bow first.

Schaefer's Canal House is a hidden gem along the Northern Shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Located in Chesapeake City, MD, the deep-water marina is nestled on Back Creek, which branches off of the Elk River. The facility has undergone some fantastic rehabilitations to both the dock area as well as the main house.

On our way from Cape May to Baltimore. Liked it so much we stayed a second night. Quaint town and very nice restaurant.

Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.

Easy access to water hose and electric hookup. The only draw-back is that there are no showers. Even a cold water outside rinse off shower would have been nice. Nice folks running the docks (inc their staff).

At the end of the block, carefully jaywalk across Pacific Avenue. Follow the path on the other side of the street past the very large, very modern, high tech house with big windows for a few yards until you reach the first of six canals. Your best option in this neighborhood is the centrally located Hotel Erwin. With its funky décor, rooftop lounge and ocean views, this property puts you right in the thick of it all and is within walking distance of the canals. You can also score a package with surf lessons. Venice Beach Walking Tours offers organized strolls, but the area is easily self-guided.

Piraeus Athens Cruise Port Location, Things to do, Excursions

piraeus cruise port

It was dedicated to “Olympian” Zeus, a name originating from his position as head of the Olympian Gods. The temple is not as preserved as Parthenon, and you cannot get very close to it. However, by the entrance to the complex, there are instructions on how to book a skip-the-line ticket on-site and the whole process takes 5 minutes, assuming you have internet of course. The iconic symbol of the entire archeological complex is the Parthenon, the largest temple of the classical antiquity period dating from 438 BC. With its massive Doric columns and monumental sculptures, the Parthenon is dedicated to the goddess Athena, the city’s patron. For first-time visitors, Acropolis Hill is definitely the top pick!

Princess Cruises: Ask a Question Cruise Critic Message Board Forums

Plenty of included food so all the paid options are optional. In the US Princess has fully refundable deposits most of the time. Now, other lines like X and RCI do not usually have refundable deposits, unless you pay a lot more for it. IMHO cruises are exceptional value for money compared with land based holidays. I would recommend canceling as I think your attitude isn’t likely to improve.

How much does it cost to go on Crown Princess?

It definitely is a bottomless money pit - as long as you keep throwing money into it. The math for plus or premium just doesn't work for us. We also don't spend much on board either, in fact I refer to us as a couple of freeloaders. We don't do many excursions, and we don't do specialty dining much either.

Fellow Passengers

Sunbeds on the decks are almost touching each other. Wine is served to you already in a glass and not by a sommelier. Evening meal portions are very small and the whole meal is rushed.

It would be nice if you added location to your profile, but I had not read very many words at all before realizing you are from UK. It is unfortunate the travel rules there - or one PCL takes advantage of or has a contrary policy - mean your deposits are non-refundable. You yourself has said this experience has tainted the entire cruise for you. It won't get better, sounds like you will just dwell on it and especially if anything else goes wrong between now and then. I think based on your post, you should cancel and find another vacation.

I just can't wrap my head about how much do you actually need to spend before it actually feels like a care free all-inclusive experience, which it certainly doesn't feel like it at the moment, it's like there's a toll booth at every turn. They also hold you to ransom with the deposit by the "You want to cancel? sure, we have pocketed your £600"...so long sucker, so I am hanging in there in the hope that something good happens, although that's not looking too hopeful right now. Crown Princess deck plans include six room-only decks (Emerald, Dolphin, Caribe, Baja, Aloha and Riviera), four of which are sandwiched between other room-only decks, allowing for quiet nights in a large percentage of the cabins.

Once upon a time, cruising was an “ all included” vacation, or almost so. Advertised prices are base, lowest cost inside cabins per person. It doesn’t seem like much until you multiply by the number of passengers and add drinks, specialty dining, excursions and more. There is still a lot included in the price and many cruisers don’t spend much more than that, if at all. It’s up to you whether you want to buy alcoholic beverages or take excursions.

I never buy anything from the gift shops. With that said, there is no way for you to avoid adding some expense to this trip. As for the cost to get to the ship, that shouldn't be a surprise to you. Cruising can often be pretty cheap if you want it to be but you have to work at making it cheap. It can be very easy to let the dollars mount as you upgrade cabins, buy packages, add excursions etc.

Good people work for every one of the cruise lines. From the top execs down to the hard working stewards. Don’t bring your attitude on board and spoil it for others. The complaint you and many others have with cruising is the community. Community is what makes cruising unique and fun for so many people.

Eat the non refundable deposit, book something else on land and forget cruising. Join your Roll Call on Cruise Critic often times people will be organizing excursions that are cheaper than the cruise line. Yes, it feels like a bottomless pit of money I am throwing my money into when Princess have changed the goal posts and I just have to suck it up, I just need someone to change my mind before I hit the cancel button....be gentle. Our costs before we even step on ship are £5k approx without the Plus package or any up selling which will occur either closer to the time or on board. For any cruises listed, Cruise Critic does not guarantee any specific rates or prices. In addition, average cruise prices are updated nightly.

Cruising is a great experience and IMO value for money whatever way you cut it but only if you do it your way and not the cruise line's way! Spend what you want to spend and no more and if that doesn't make cruising really attractive to you then best not to cruise IMO. Many, many people go in cruises every year and don’t buy anything more than the basic travel and they have a wonderful time. They aren’t worried about what other people on the ship get that they don’t get. Plenty of people do it on the cheap, don't drink and stick to the included offers you won't feel out of place and not fitting in.

You can sell the cruise for reasonable admin fees if you can find someone to buy it. As for moving forward there are options in the UK as the package regulations. What surprises me is you seem to feel some of this is a surprise and a money grab.

We would not cruise with Princess again. Cruising is not for everyone and if you decide not to cruise then that is a perfectly good decision for you. For some people they only need the bare basics of accommodation, food, water and entertainment to make a cruise a wonderful holiday especially if the stops are places they want to visit. You normally don't need to spend a small fortune on excursions... We normally just visit by foot or local bus/train. However, others want the extras of drinks packages, wifi, and many love the ship excursions or health spa services, private cabanas, speciality dining.

But you really don't need all that stuff to have a good time. There are plenty of cruisers who stick to the standard fare, don't eat at the specialty restaurants, don't drink alcohol, and don't purchase shore excursions directly through Princess. Personally, I don't eat at the specialty restaurants, have my alcoholic drinks at bars while in port, and book my shore excursions independently.

For me, how much you spend depends on the kind of holiday you want to have. Yes, Princess wants you to spend more but they are a business... Our job, as customers if you like, is to only spend what we are happy spending.

A little research prior to booking would have been ideal. I have a feeling that you’re convinced that you won’t enjoy yourself. You already feel cheated and disappointed. Seasoned cruisers understand the importance of being flexible. Itineraries change all the time and you have to expect the unexpected when you choose to cruise.

We only do specialty restaurants if they're included in a promo. We have a wonderful time on our cruises and don't feel deprived at all. We find that there's plenty to do on the ship without paying extra, and we enjoy getting off the ship and just walking around. I don't know if you'll be able to have a good time without all the extras. If you can't do that, then you'll either decide whether to pay whatever or just not cruise. I think you must have been lured by a low base price and as a result, your expectations were set too high.
